Chicago, and Champions League

July 2007 - Diane Scalia, Brazilian model Ana, and former Serie A player Cristiano Scapolo with AC Milan's 2007 Champions League Cup, Milan USA Academy, Newhall, CA. Photo courtesy of Jim Riggio.
Today we have a mix of topics from the US and abroad.

This is Champions League week, in European football (soccer).  Chef Di will introduce the first in a series of Champion League (CL) reports, with a guest correspondent. This series will continue every couple weeks through May 21 when the CL final takes place in Moscow. Fans might love international soccer, or want to entertain the possibility that they could fall in love with it, so today's guest correspondent Jim Riggio will join Chef Di to chat up the sport they are both so passionate about -- quite possibly with emphasis on the Italian teams.

With his vast knowledge of the league and the sport, Jim has written about il calcio (Italian football) for ESPNsoccernet and was their token correspondent for Italy during the World Cup 2006. To get acquainted with some of Jim's excellent work, click

Bringing equal passion back to the US, today (21 Feb 2008) is the 10th anniversary of the passing of Harry Caray, one of Chicago's most revered sports icons. Harry Caray's - a time-honored food&sports tradition in Chicago - deserves SportsBites' time and attention! We'll have a look at the "Toast to Harry" celebration going on tonight at 7pm - wherever you are - and that includes all 50 US states and, 100 countries around the world. Check out this page for more information, and visit www.harrycarays.com for more on the late, great man's Restaurant Group and its happenings.

Our recipe this week will honor Chicago in an Italian-esque baseball sort of way. Chef Di's very delicious  "Italian Haute Dog" recipe will be posted soon!
